Men's basketball falls to hot-shooting Covenant in final game before winter break

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team hung with the homestanding Covenant Scots throughout the first half Saturday afternoon in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, but a big second-half run vaulted Covenant to an 88-80 win over the Stormy Petrels in the final game for Oglethorpe before they head out for winter break. The loss dropped the Petrels to an even 5-5 on the season.

The Scots outscored Oglethorpe 37-20 over the opening 13 minutes of the second half to build a 17-point lead on the visitors. Covenant went 9-for-14 from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes while shooting 58.3 percent from the field overall and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line for the period. This came while they held the Petrels to just 37.9 percent from the field during the second half. For the game, the Scots shot 53.8 percent from the field overall, 57.7 percent from long distance, and 85 percent from the charity stripe while holding Oglethorpe to 44.1 percent from the field.

Covenant jumped out to an 11-4 lead over the game's first 3:15, but Oglethorpe responded with back-to-back baskets to make it 11-9. The Scots pushed out to a 10-point lead with eight straight points over two minutes, taking a 21-11 lead. The Petrels came back with a 13-4 run over four minutes to cut their deficit to a single point, 25-24, with 6:30 left. Over the remainder of the half, the Petrels slowly pushed out to a lead, edging ahead 38-35 with 2:30 left in the half. The first half finished with the game tied 40-40.

Early in the second half, Covenant used runs of 26-10 and 8-2 to build a 77-60 advantage with 7:11 remaining. Oglethorpe finished the game on a 20-11 run over the final seven minutes, but were unable to work their way back into the game.

Senior forward Will Perry led all participants with 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting overall, 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Sophomore forward Will Koch added 15 points and led the Petrels with nine rebounds and two blocks. Sophomore guard Lane Foster led the Petrels with five assists while scoring 15 points on 4-of-7 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line.

The Petrels will now break for the holidays before returning for the Comfort Inn and Suites Holiday Classic Dec. 29 and 30 at Dorough Field House. Oglethorpe will take on Ozarks (Arkansas) on Dec. 29 and Bridgewater (Virginia) on Dec. 30.
