Men's basketball falls to Bob Jones 75-63 in Vikings Tipoff Tournament

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Friday evening in Mount Berry, falling to the Bob Jones Bruins 75-63 on the opening day of the Vikings Tipoff Tournament. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 1-1 on the season, and they'll complete their stay at the event Saturday at 2 p.m. against Warren Wilson.

The Petrels got off to a 6-1 start over the opening three minutes of the game, but Bob Jones responded and brought it back to a two-point game, 9-7, with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half. The teams continued to trade points for several minutes after that, but Oglethorpe held a 25-20 advantage with just over six minutes left until halftime. Oglethorpe didn't score another point the rest of the half, though, and the Bruins finished the period on a 15-0 run to take a 35-25 lead into the break.

In the second half, Bob Jones pulled out to a 20-point lead when they went on a 14-4 over run over three minutes, pushing their advantage to 52-32 with 11:09 to go. Oglethorpe came back with an 18-7 run over 3:45, though, cutting the Bruin lead to 59-50 with seven minutes left. Bob Jones pushed their advantage back to 14 points, 69-55, with 4:15 left, though, and held on from there for the 12-point win.

Junior guard Lane Foster led the Petrels with 15 points on 5-of-6 from the field, while junior forward Will Koch added nine points and nine rebounds.

"We are still trying to figure some things out," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "It's tough to win a game when you commit 22 turnovers. Credit to Bob Jones, they shot the ball extremely well. But we had a lot of self-inflicted mistakes. It's early, and we will get better."

The Bruins shot 55.6 percent from three-point range while holding Oglethorpe to 29.2 percent. Bob Jones shot 49.1 percent overall to the Petrels' 44 percent, and outrebounded Oglethorpe 35-28.
