The Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned their highest-ever national ranking Tuesday, as the United Soccer Coaches placed them at No. 3 in the organization's Division III top 25. The Stormy Petrels also came in at No. 13 in the D3soccer.com top 25, which is voted on by a panel of coaches, sports information directors and D3soccer.com staff.
The Petrels got off to a 4-0 start over the opening two weeks of the season, earning victories over Claremont-M-S, Pomona-Pitzer, Emory and Gordon. The Petrels outscored their opponents by a combined 15-4 over those four games.
The squad gets set for a big road trip Friday and Sunday, as they travel to Virginia to take on a pair of quality opponents. They'll go against Lynchburg Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Lexington on Sunday at 3 p.m. to battle a Washington and Lee team ranked 14th in the coaches' poll and 23rd in the D3soccer.com poll.
Defending national champion Tufts earned the top spot in both polls and took all 17 first-place votes in the D3soccer.com ranking. They're followed by Oneonta, the Petrels, John Carroll and Johns Hopkins in the coaches' poll. Amherst, John Carroll, Oneonta and Cortland round out the top five in the D3soccer.com poll.
Three 2019 opponents of the Petrels earned votes in each poll. In addition to Washington and Lee, Claremont-M-S came in at No. 8 in the coaches' poll while SAA foe Centre received votes. Centre slotted in at No. 15 in the D3soccer.com poll while Claremont-M-S received votes.
