The Oglethorpe men's soccer team, ranked third in the coaches' poll and 13th in the D3soccer.com poll coming into this weekend, fell to the homestanding Lynchburg Hornets 2-1 Friday night in Virginia for their first loss of the young season. Lynchburg's Luke Mega scored twice, the second time with just 10 minutes left, and the Stormy Petrels couldn't make it all the way back. The Petrels fell to 4-1 on the campaign.
Oglethorpe outshot the Hornets by a narrow margin, 10-9, and each team put four shots on goal, but Mega scored in the 20th minute to give his team the advantage, then added another in the 81st to put the Petrels behind the eight-ball.
The visitors gave themselves a chance, though, when senior forward Bentley Skinner scored off an assist from sophomore forward Abraham Lopez in the 86th minute. Suddenly, the Petrels had new life. They had a chance to tie it in the 88th when junior defender Sebastian Carlson put a shot on target, but Lynchburg goalkeeper Kyle Gallagher came up with the save.
The Petrels took seven corner kicks to just two for the Hornets. The two team combined for seven yellow cards on the evening.
Oglethorpe will be back in action Sunday, when they stay in Virginia and travel to Lexington to battle No. 23 Washington and Lee. That game is set to kick off at 3 p.m.
