Men's soccer runs past Anderson 7-1

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got started early and never let up against the visiting Anderson (Indiana) Ravens Friday night, winning 7-1 at the Oglethorpe Track and Field to improve to 5-2 on the season. The Stormy Petrels got a hat trick from sophomore forward Abraham Lopez in the first 15 minutes of the game, a pair of goals and an assist from senior forward Gabe Alvarez, and a pair of assists from sophomore forward Tuli Mwarumba en route to the 6-goal victory.

The Petrels opened the game with Lopez's flurry of goals. He scored in the sixth, 10th and 15th minutes to quickly give Oglethorpe a 3-0 lead and mark the first hat trick of his career. He was assisted by freshman forward James Williams on the first, as Williams fired a shot that was initially stopped by Anderson goalkeeper Caleb Oliver before the ball deflected to Lopez on the far post. The second and third Lopez goals were assisted by Mwarumba.

A giveaway in their own half set the stage for the Ravens' opening goal just 30 seconds after Lopez completed his hat trick, though, making it 3-1. Though Oglethorpe had dominated possession and the shot count for the entire first half, outshooting their opponents 17-3 in that regard, the Ravens had a couple chances to get right back into the game late in the half, as they came inches away from making it 3-2 a couple times.

The Petrels withstood that push from the visitors and tallied a back-breaking goal in the 43rd minute as senior forward Gabe Alvarez took a pass from sophomore midfielder Ben Agnew and finished past Oliver to make it 4-1 going into the break.

Oglethorpe really opened things up in the second half, with Alvarez quickly tallying a second in the 49th minute. He then assisted on a goal from senior midfielder Josh Bronstorph in the 55th, sending in a perfect cross that Bronstorph headed home. The final Oglethorpe marker came in the 85th minute, as freshman midfielder Alec Leake scored the first goal of his career to close the scoring.

The Petrels outshot their opponent 29-7 for the game, including a 15-2 margin in shots on goal. Oglethorpe also took six corner kicks to Anderson's two.

The team will be back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they welcome Roanoke to the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
