The Oglethorpe men's soccer team outshot the visiting Roanoke Maroons and took the initiative for much of the game Sunday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but the visitors bagged a goal in each half and withstood the Stormy Petrel onslaught for a 2-0 win. The defeat dropped Oglethorpe to 5-3 on the season.
After a back-and-forth half which featured three saves from Roanoke goalkeeper Zach Behe, it was the Maroons who got on the board in the 37th minute, taking a 1-0 lead late in the period. The Petrels outshot their opponents 5-3 for the half and took the period's only corner kick, but they trailed headed into the halftime break.
In the second half, the home side continued to attack the Roanoke goal, but Behe continued to be equal to the task, tallying five saves over the course of the second half. In the 76th minute, the Maroons doubled their lead and really put the Petrels behind the eight-ball.
Oglethorpe had chances to claw back to within a goal late, including a shot from senior forward Gabe Alvarez that caromed off the post with three minutes left. It wasn't to be, however, as the visitors left with a 2-0 win.
The Petrels outshot Roanoke 17-9 on the afternoon and took all seven corner kicks in the contest, but to no avail.
They'll next be in action Saturday, when they welcome Centre to the Oglethorpe Track and Field for the start of SAA play. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. After that, they'll hit the road to take on Sewanee as they continue into conference play.
