Men's soccer beats Rhodes 3-0, moves within game of clinching share of SAA crown

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak in SAA play to 25 games Friday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee, with a 3-0 win over Rhodes. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels' current overall winning streak to five games and pulled them to within one win of clinching at least a share of their fifth straight SAA regular season crown, as well as home-field advantage throughout the SAA tournament.

The Petrels scored three goals over a 13-minute stretch of the second half to turn a 0-0 deadlock into a relatively easy victory. Junior defender Sebastian Carlson broke the scoreless game up in the 56th minute as he received the ball on a cross from sophomore midfielder Affonso Temporal and finished past Lynx goalkeeper Nathan Meglic. Senior midfielder Josh Bronstorph doubled the advantage in the 65th minute on another outstanding free kick, then sophomore forward Logan Llano finished off a free kick that senior forward Gabe Alvarez sent into the box in the 69th minute and essentially put the game on ice.

Neither team got much going in the first half, as Oglethorpe outshot Rhodes just 4-2 over the course of the opening 45 minutes. However, the Petrels responded by outshooting their opponent 7-3 in the second half, resulting in an 11-5 shot count for the game. The Lynx failed to put a single shot on target, while Oglethorpe put six on frame. Each team took five corner kicks.

The Petrels improved to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in SAA play with the win. They'll next hit the field Sunday afternoon in Conway, Arkansas, where they'll take on Hendrix at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. The Petrels would clinch a share of the league title with a win in either that game or the regular season finale at home against Berry on Oct. 26.
