Men's soccer bumps up to 18th in poll

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team moved up a spot to No. 18 in the latest Men's Top 25, released Tuesday by the website. It marked the third straight week that the Stormy Petrels were ranked in the poll, and the fourth week overall. They came in at No. 13 -- and No. 3 in the coaches' poll -- on Sept. 10 and moved from 22nd to 19th over the two polls prior to Tuesday's.

The Petrels improved to 13-3 on the season Saturday with a 5-0 win over eighth-seeded Hendrix in the first round of the SAA tournament. With the victory, top-seeded Oglethorpe advanced to the semifinals of the SAA Men's Soccer Championship for the fourth straight season and will host fourth-seeded Berry Friday night at 7 p.m. If they win that game, the Petrels advance to the conference final for the third straight year to take on either second-seeded Centre or sixth-seeded Millsaps Sunday at 1 p.m.

Oglethorpe served as the lone SAA team in the poll. Centre received votes, but not enough to work their way into the top 25.

Other ranked teams on the Petrels' schedule included No. 11 Washington and Lee, No. 14 Roanoke and No. 25 Claremont-M-S.

Amherst retained the top spot with 24 of a possible 25 first-place votes, while Calvin garnered the other and stayed at No. 2. The rest of the top five remained intact, as well, with Tufts third, Johns Hopkins fourth and Kenyon fifth. Messiah, Oneonta, Franklin and Marshall, Chicago and John Carroll rounded out the top 10.
