The Oglethorpe men's tennis team earned a clean sweep over the Hendrix Warriors on the road Saturday morning, blanking the home team 9-0. With the result, they improved to 10-5 on the season overall and notched to 4-1 in SAA play.
The Petrels started off well in the doubles portion of the match, as seniors Matthew Magee and Michael Santaloci won 8-2 at No. 2. Senior Richard Johnson and freshman Connor Sisson won the top-line match 8-2, while junior Zoe Raymond and freshman John Bielicki prevailed 8-0 at No.3.
Up 3-0 headed to singles, the Petrels continued to pour it on. Regionally-ranked sophomore Walker Benson made quick work of his top-line match, winning 6-1, 6-0 to make it 4-0. The clinch came from sophomore Calvin Schneider at No. 4, as he prevailed 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the dual match for Oglethorpe.
After the clinch, Bielicki came up with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6. With the match already decided and weather a factor, the two teams decided to play the remainder of the dual match as a series of eight-game sets, similarly to how doubles matches are decided. Johnson won 8-1 at No. 2, Raymond swept his opponent 8-0 at No. 3, and Sisson earned a singles victory with an 8-2 win at No. 5.
"This was a good solid win on the road," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell, "and it was nice getting freshmen Connor Sisson and John Bielicki some experience. We now have an important match against a very good Rhodes team tomorrow."
The Petrels take on the No. 39 Lynx from Memphis, Tennessee, Sunday morning. After that, they'll head up to northwest Georgia to go against Berry in their final regular-season match on Friday.
