The Oglethorpe men's cross country team returns on Friday with their opening meet of the season, and they'll look to improve on an outstanding 2018 campaign that saw them finish second at the SAA Championships and eighth at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional. The Petrels enter this season ranked 10th in the South/Southeast region preseason poll.
The second-place finish in the conference marked Oglethorpe's highest-ever SAA finish and featured multiple All-SAA performances. SAA Men's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year Hayden Guthrie returns to the Stormy Petrels for the 2019 season, as do All-SAA honorable mention performers Bill Lester and Mateo Villa.
The Petrels also return seniors Nick Berardi, Nick Evans, Andrew Aycock and Rodrigo Meade, along with Villa, to the squad. That group joins an overall list of 14 returners to the Petrels. Head coach Kirk Shellhouse also welcomes seven newcomers into the fold, and they'll look to help the Petrels bolster their squad for the upcoming season.
The season starts on Friday with a trip to Oxford, Alabama, for Jacksonville State's JSU Strut's Season Opener. After that, they'll head to East Ridge, Tennessee, for Chattanooga's UTC Twilight Meet on Sept. 13.
They'll get their first look at the Memphis course set to host the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional when they compete in the Rhodes College Invitational on Sept. 21. They'll go back to Tennessee for the Sewanee Invitational on Sept. 28 and back to Oxford for the Foothills Invite on Oct. 5.
The Petrels get their first look at the SAA Championship course in northwest Georgia when they head to Mount Berry for the Berry Invitational on Oct. 19.
They'll return to Mount Berry for the SAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 2, then go back to Memphis for the NCAA Regionals on Nov. 16.
