The women's basketball team lost to Berry College on Pinholster Court on Friday night, 65-56. The Petrels erased an early 8 point deficit to lead the Vikings 33-31 at the half but could only muster 8 second half field goals en route to the loss.
Playing for the first time in 13 days, Oglethorpe showed some rust in the early stages and fell behind 14-6 with 11:55 to play in the first half. The Petrels found their rhythm though and put together a 25-10 run to open up a 7 point lead of their own with 1:33 left in the half. The Vikings edged closer just before the break to send the teams into the locker room with Oglethorpe leading 33-31.
Berry wrested the advantage away from Oglethorpe in the early stages of the second half and took the lead for good after a basket with 17:33 remaining. The Vikings would march the lead up to 9 with 13:24 left but Oglethorpe managed to trim it down to a single point on two occasions with less than 7 minutes to play. The Petrels could not get the defensive stops they needed, however, and the Vikings converted down the stretch to seal the victory.
Junior Kelley Reeves led the charge for Oglethorpe with a team-high 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high 5 steals. Katie Weeks struggled from the field (5-17) but was the only other Petrel in double figures with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman Ky'Laine Rogers pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Petrels in the loss.
Oglethorpe is now 2-5 on the season and will get set to host their annual Holiday Classic this Monday and Tuesday. The Petrels face Texas-Tyler at 7:00 p.m. on Monday and Maryville at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
