The Oglethorpe women's basketball team re-entered the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll at No. 20 Tuesday, bouncing back after spending a week outside of the top 25. It marked the second time in 2019 that the Stormy Petrels were ranked in the WBCA poll after they were 19th in the preseason release.
The Petrels began their season 5-1, earning victories over LaGrange and Piedmont Nov. 9 and 10 in the SAA-USA South Classic at Dorough Field House; Randolph-Macon Nov. 16 in Emory, Virginia, at the Comfort Suites Classic; and Maryville (Tennessee) and Otterbein Friday and Saturday at the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic in Danville, Kentucky. Their lone loss came to host Emory and Henry Nov. 15 at the Comfort Suites Classic.
Amherst maintained the top spot in the poll and secured seven of a possible eight first-place votes. Tufts stayed put at No. 2 and St. Thomas (Minnesota) moved up a spot to No. 3 with the other No. 1 nod. Scranton and Bowdoin each moved up a spot to Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Hope, Wartburg, DeSales, Transylvania and Marymount rounded out the top 10.
The Petrels served as the only SAA team to earn a spot in the ranking. They also received votes in the D3hoops.com top 25, the other of the two major polls, and were the only SAA squad to do so.
Oglethorpe plays their last game before the Thanksgiving holiday Tuesday evening, when they host Covenant at 6 p.m. from Dorough Field House.
