Women's golf drops to fifth to finish BSC Southern Showdown

The Oglethorpe women's golf team shot a 31-over-par 319 at Bent Brook Golf Course in Birmingham, Alabama, Tuesday, dropping four spots down the leaderboard to fifth place at the conclusion of the 10-team, 36-hole BSC Southern Showdown. The Stormy Petrels finished at 57-over 633 over two days, putting themselves 15 strokes back of a first-place tie between Methodist and Berry. 

Sophomore Angel Sanchez led the Petrels on the week, finishing tied for fifth with a 10-over 154 over two days. She posted 7-over 79 on Tuesday, recording three birdies over the course of her round. The Petrel sophomore finished seven strokes back of Methodist's Alexandra Williams, the individual medalist.

Junior Ana Garcia also finished in the top 15, coming in at 13-over 157 for the week and 79 on the day. She finished 10 strokes back of Williams and carded a birdie and 11 pars on the day.

Junior Mara Tiger finished tied for 22nd with identical rounds of 8-over 80. That put her at 16-over 160 for the tournament.

Senior Hailey Willman fired consecutive rounds of 9-over 81, while fellow senior Katie Hanley posted an 11-over 83 on Tuesday. Both finished in the top 40.

Individually, sophomore Alivia Mattiace tied Tiger for 22nd after posting 79 at Bent Brook on Tuesday. Freshman Graci Hallenbeck also golfed as an individual and finished in the top 50.

The Petrels came in five strokes back of SAA mates Rhodes, who finished fourth, and three ahead of sixth-place Huntingdon. Oglethorpe bested seventh-place Sewanee by 23 strokes.

The BSC Southern Showdown completed the regular season for the Petrels, who will now get set for the SAA Golf Championships. That event is set to take place April 26-28 at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee. 

First Round Recap

The Oglethorpe women's golf team got their week at Bent Brook Golf Course in Birmingham, Alabama, off to an outstanding start. They held the 18-hole lead after Day 1 at the BSC Southern Showdown, posting 26-over-par 314 and finishing the day a stroke better than Carnegie Mellon and two up on Huntingdon.

Sophomore Angel Sanchez led the Stormy Petrels on the day, posting 3-over 75 to finish tied for third through 18 holes. She'll enter Tuesday's final round just two strokes back of Huntingdon's Vanessa Leiterman. She posted two birdies and 11 pars over the course of her round.

Junior Ana Garcia also finished the day in the top 10, entering the clubhouse at 6-over 78 to finish the day tied for seventh, five strokes back. She carded a birdie and 11 pars during her round.

Junior Mara Tiger posted an 8-over 80 on the day and carded four birdies during her round to finish tied for 18th, seven strokes back. Senior Hailey Willman tied for 22nd after carding a 9-over 81 for the round. Fellow senior Katie Hanley finished the day tied for 40th, posting an 84.

Sophomore Alivia Mattiace and freshman Graci Hallenbeck golfed as individuals for the Petrels. Mattiace tied Willman for 22nd while Hallenbeck came in 48th with an 88 on the day.

All competitors will be back on the course at 10 a.m. EDT Tuesday morning for the tournament's final round. The Petrels will be looking for their first tournament win of the season.
