Women's lacrosse blanked by Sewanee, 19-0

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Sewanee Tigers in their SAA opener Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The Tigers blanked the Stormy Petrels 19-0, scoring 13 goals in the opening half of play to put the game out of reach early. With the loss, the Petrels fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

The Tigers ran off six goals in the opening seven minutes of the game, then added seven more in the opening period including a couple of man-down goals. The Petrels were down 13-0 at the break, but did hold the visitors to fewer goals in the second half. Sewanee outscored Oglethorpe 6-0 in the second half.

For the game, Sewanee outshot Oglethorpe 27-5 on goal. They scooped 25 ground balls to the Petrels' 12, and were successful on 13 of 16 clear attempts and 3 of 3 free-position shots. They forced 33 Oglethorpe turnovers while securing 15 draw controls. Oglethorpe forced 23 Tiger giveaways and secured six draw controls.

Junior defender Dreshona Mapps-Whitmore secured three ground balls for the Petrels, while freshman goalie Zoe Geiger made eight saves.

The Petrels will be back in action Tuesday night against Piedmont. They'll travel northeast to Demorest for the in-state showdown, which is set to get started at 7 p.m.
