The Oglethorpe women's soccer team continued their outstanding run of play to start the season Sunday afternoon at Piedmont's Bradford Classic in Demorest, blanking the Averett Cougars 3-0 on a neutral field to begin the season a perfect 3-0. The Stormy Petrels got goals from junior forward Medina Besic and senior forward Kayla Trice, in a addition to an Averett own goal, en route to the victory.
The Petrels jumped on the Cougars early, getting the scoring started in the seventh minute. Besic received a cross from freshman defender Marissa Romaine and slid her shot past the Averett goalkeeper to give her team a 1-0 advantage.
Oglethorpe doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Trice took a cross from Besic, who finished the game with three points, and blasted a shot past the Cougar goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Meanwhile, the Petrels outshot Averett 9-4 in the first half as they looked to build their advantage.
The Petrels got some help from the Cougars and tallied their third goal of the game in the 55th minute. Sophomore midfielder Tress Southard sent in a dangerous cross and an Averett defender directed the ball into her own net, giving the Petrels a 3-0 advantage.
Averett didn't really threaten after that, as they managed just three shots over the course of the second half to Oglethorpe's nine. For the game, the Petrels outshot the Cougars 18-7 and put six shots on goal to none for their opponents.
The Petrels will next be in action Friday evening, when they'll take on Bob Jones at 6 p.m. in their home opener at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. It'll be the first of two games they'll host over the weekend, the other being a contest against Huntingdon Sunday at 5 p.m.
