Women's soccer blanks Huntingdon 3-0, extends best start since 2010

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team continued its unbeaten streak to start the season Sunday evening at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, beating the visiting Huntingdon Hawks 3-0 to improve to 5-0 on the young season. That mark extended the program's best start since 2010, when the Stormy Petrels started the season 6-0. The Petrels got a pair of goals from senior forward Kayla Trice and the third assist in the last two games by sophomore defender Lauren Kirby en route to the victory.

The home side started fast, getting on the board in the opening 10 minutes of the contest. The Petrels won a free kick about 35 yards from goal, and Kirby stepped up to take it and send a ball into the box. Just as she did twice in the team's 2-0 win over Bob Jones on Friday, she bagged an assist on the play, as the ball went past the Huntingdon goalkeeper and ran to the back post, where sophomore midfielder Tress Southard got a foot to it and freshman forward Meagan Thacker turned it into the net, giving her team the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.

Trice doubled the advantage in the 35th minute. She fired a shot which was saved by Huntingdon goalkeeper Kylie Kersh, but Trice stayed with it and hammered the ball home to give her team a 2-0 advantage.

The Oglethorpe senior forward wasn't done, either, as she got on the scoreboard again just after the halftime break. Junior midfielder Ana Shults sent in a cross from the right side in the 53rd minute. Southard was almost able to run onto the end of it, but the ball went through to Trice on the back post, who again made no mistake with the finish.

After attaining the 3-0 lead, the Petrels sat back and absorbed pressure from Huntingdon for much of the rest of the contest. The Hawks actually outshot the Petrels 13-10 and won four corner kicks to two for the Petrels, but Oglethorpe proved far more efficient in front of goal.

The Petrels will look to tie the best start to a season since 2010 on Wednesday, when they welcome Agnes Scott to the Oglethorpe Track and Field at 7 p.m.
