The Oglethorpe volleyball team returns to the court this weekend, as they'll head across town to Emory for three matches to kick off a new era for the program.
New head coach Anna Braun, an Oglethorpe alumna, takes over the reins for the Stormy Petrels and looks to move the team up the SAA standings. The 2018 team finished 6-23 overall with wins over Centre, Huntingdon, Agnes Scott and Salem. They beat the former two teams twice each, and accrued a 2-12 SAA mark.
The Stormy Petrels return 10 performers from the 2018 squad and will welcome eight newcomers to the team as they look to improve on last season's record.
The Petrels begin the season with three matches at the Emory Classic, where they'll take on Piedmont, Emory and Henry, and Belhaven. They'll take on the former two Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively, and return to the same venue to take on Belhaven Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
The following weekend, they'll head to Indiana for the Franklin College Tournament, where they'll battle Franklin, Marietta and Baldwin Wallace Sept. 6 and 7. After that, they'll return south for road matches against Covenant and preseason No. 19 Berry, the latter serving as the SAA opener for both teams.
The Petrels will return to Dorough Field House for their home opener against Birmingham-Southern on Sept. 21. They'll host Millsaps and Huntingdon in a tri-match on Sept. 22 before welcoming Covenant on Sept. 25.
After that, they'll hit the road again to for a battle against preseason No. 1 Emory at Dorough Field House on Sept. 26. That weekend, they'll welcome Centre and Sewanee to Dorough Field House to close out their September slate.
To begin October, the Petrels will travel west to take on Rhodes and Hendrix Oct. 5 and 6 before returning to Dorough to host Berry on Oct. 9. They'll take on Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern on the road the weekend of Oct. 12, return home to battle Hendrix and Rhodes the weekend of Oct. 19, then close out the SAA slate with trips to Sewanee and Centre Oct. 26 and 27. The Petrels close out their regular season against Agnes Scott on Oct. 30 in Dorough Field House.
The SAA tournament takes place Nov. 8-10 at the home of the conference's No. 1 seed.
