Volleyball remains undefeated with 3-0 sweep of Franklin

The Oglethorpe volleyball team continued its outstanding play to start the season Friday, sweeping the homestanding Franklin Grizzlies 3-0 to start their weekend at the Franklin College Tournament in Indiana. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 4-0 on the season, marking the program's best start since the 2014 team won their first six matches.

The Petrels made relatively quick work of the Grizzlies on Friday night, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-17 over the three sets.

The visitors opened up a 6-3 lead early in the first set, but Franklin quickly made it 6-5 and continued to hang around in the stanza, eventually finding themselves within a couple points, 12-10. From that point, however, the Petrels embarked on an 8-1 run to open up a 20-11 advantage. A 6-2 Franklin run put them back in it at 22-17, but Oglethorpe made quick work of that, running off three of the next four points to win the set 25-18.

The Oglethorpe domination continued in the second set, as they ran off six straight points early to take a 7-1 lead. The teams traded points for a brief period, but the Petrels went back on a tear, outscoring the Grizzlies 12-2 during one stretch to build a 21-7 lead. Franklin ran off six of seven points to cut the Petrel advantage to 23-14, but didn't get any closer than that. The Petrels won the set 25-14.

The teams went back and forth to begin the third set, with the Grizzlies taking a 10-7 lead early. Three straight Oglethorpe points tied the score, then the teams fought back and forth for awhile, resulting in a 15-15 scoreline. The Petrels turned the set to their favor from that point, though, outscoring Franklin 10-2 over the remainder of the match to take the set 25-17.

Junior middle hitter TaKorya Green led the way for the Petrels with 13 kills and hit .429 in the process. She also collected five service aces and three solo blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Emilee Etter recorded 12 kills and hit .579, committing just a single attack error over the course of the match. Sophomore setters Emma Williams and Grace Holder combined for 32 assists, with 19 for Willams and 13 for Holder. Senior defensive specialist Alex Prots recorded a team-high 17 digs and added four service aces, while senior outside hitter Monique Ellis contributed 14 digs.

The Petrels will be back in action from the Franklin College Tournament on Saturday. They'll take on Marietta and Baldwin Wallace in back-to-back matches starting at 10 a.m.
