Volleyball falls in four sets at Covenant

The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell 3-1 to the homestanding Covenant Scots Saturday in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, losing by a score line of 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 4-3 on the young season.

The teams went back and forth early in the opening set, and the Petrels led 15-13 at one point. However, Covenant went on a 10-4 run to turn the set into their favor and take a 23-19 lead. The Petrels won three of the next four points, but the Scots eventually closed out the stanza 25-22.

The second set was tied 9-9, but Oglethorpe ran off four straight to take a 13-9 lead. The teams traded three-point runs after that, but Covenant embarked on a 7-2 run to take a 19-18 lead. Oglethorpe turned things back around, though, and won the final two points of the set after Covenant tied it 23-23. The Petrels won the set 25-23.

The Scots got out to a 13-6 lead early in the third set, but Oglethorpe responded with a 6-1 run and cut their deficit to just two, 14-12. Covenant responded with a 5-1 run of their own, though, and vaulted back out to a 19-13 advantage. The Petrels pulled it back to within three a few times, but the Scots finished the final three points of the set to win it 25-19 and take a 2-1 lead.

The home side slowly built an 11-6 lead to start the fourth set. The Petrels came back with a 5-1 run, though, and cut the Covenant lead to 15-14. The two sides were tied 20-20 late, but the Scots took a 22-20 lead. The visitors came back with three straight of their own to edge ahead 23-22. However, Covenant ran off three points in a row after that to close it out 25-23.

Freshman outside hitter Jackie Schner led the team with 15 kills while also collecting 11 digs. Sophomore setter Emma Williams tallied 24 assists, 10 digs and four total blocks. Senior defensive specialist Alex Prots led the Petrels with 15 digs, while junior middle hitter TaKorya Green led with six total blocks.

The Petrels will be back in action Wednesday evening, when they stay in-state and travel to Mount Berry to go against No. 4 Berry. After that, they'll return to Dorough Field House for their home opener Saturday at noon against Birmingham-Southern.
