Volleyball drops four-set match at Rhodes

The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell behind early Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee, and never could get back into the contest, falling 3-1 to the homestanding Rhodes Lynx. The Stormy Petrels fell 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14. With the defeat, they fell to 4-11 on the season overall and 0-6 in SAA play.

The teams went back and forth early in the first set, as the Petrels led 8-7. However, Rhodes slowly started to pull into the lead with a 6-2 run which gave them a 13-10 edge. They followed that up with a 5-1 stretch to extend their advantage to 19-14. Four consecutive Oglethorpe points got them back to within a point, 20-19, but the Lynx finished off the final three to take the stanza by five points.

The Petrels bagged the first two points of the second set, but the home side came back with a 6-1 run to build a 6-3 advantage. After consecutive Petrel points, the Lynx ran off five straight to extend their lead to 11-5. Oglethorpe cut it back to a three-point game and then traded points with Rhodes for awhile, but the home side used four straight points to push it out to 19-11. They then continued to pull away and finished off the set from there, taking it 25-19.

Oglethorpe answered in the third set, but it was the Lynx who controlled the proceedings for awhile. The set was even at 9-9 when Rhodes went on a 4-1 run to build a 13-10 lead. They followed that up with a 5-0 spurt to build an 18-12 edge. However, Oglethorpe rolled off seven consecutive points to turn the set on its head and take a 21-20 lead. They scored the final four points of the set to keep the match going with a 25-22 win in the third.

The Petrels led 5-2 early in the fourth set and maintained a 12-10 advantage as the teams went back and forth. However, Rhodes ran off three straight to build a one-point lead, then went ahead by a couple after Oglethorpe tied it up. The Petrels last scored in the set to make it a 15-14 deficit, though, and Rhodes went on a 10-0 run to finish off the set and win it 25-14. In all, the home side finished the fourth set on a 15-2 run.

Junior middle hitter TaKorya Green led the team with 12 kills while accruing three total blocks. Sophomore setter Emma Williams led the team with 17 assists while adding six kills of her own, and fellow sophomore setter Grace Holder contributed 16 assists and seven digs. Junior defensive specialist Hailee Bugg led the Petrels with 16 digs.

Oglethorpe will now continue on to Conway, Arkansas, on Sunday, where they'll take on Hendrix at 1 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll return to Dorough Field House to go against No. 6 Berry Wednesday at 6 p.m.
