Volleyball swept in three straight sets at Hendrix

The Oglethorpe volleyball team dropped their fifth straight match Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the homestanding Hendrix Warriors in Conway, Arkansas. The 12-3 Warriors jumped on the Stormy Petrels early and didn't let up, dropping the visitors to 5-12 overall and 0-7 in SAA play.

Hendrix got off to an excellent start in the first set, taking a 16-6 lead before the Petrels won consecutive points. They went on a 14-4 run at their height. Oglethorpe came back with five consecutive points to make the score 18-13, but the Warriors finished the set from there. They went on a five-point run of their own and won 25-15.

In the second set, the Petrels took a 7-6 lead early. However, Hendrix came back with four straight points to turn the set into their favor, 10-7. The Petrels stayed close for awhile, pulling themselves to within a couple points, 13-12. The home side began a 7-2 run from that point, though, to take a 20-14 lead. Oglethorpe cut it down to 22-18, but the home side eventually prevailed 25-18.

Hendrix went ahead 9-6 in the third set, but the Petrels responded and tied it 10-10. The Warriors rolled off five consecutive to build a 15-10 lead, but the visitors slowly pushed themselves back into the set, cutting their deficit to three a couple times. Later on in the stanza, they went on a three-point run to pull to within two, 23-21. They staved off match point at 24-21 to make it 24-22, but couldn't get any closer. Hendrix won the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.

Freshman outside hitter Jackie Schner led the Petrels with 12 kills, while junior middle hitter TaKorya Green recorded eight kills while hitting .444. She also recorded four total blocks and five digs. Sophomore setter Emma Williams accrued 21 assists and six digs. Junior defensive specialist Hailee Bugg led the squad with 16 digs on the afternoon.

The Petrels get back to action Wednesday evening when they host No. 6 Berry from Dorough Field House at 6 p.m. After that, they'll go back on the road next weekend to Millsaps and Birmingham-Southern.
